Alphabet, the parent company of online search monolith Google, has alerted its North American staff to work from home to reduce the potential spread of the Covid-19 Virus.
The company’s move was announced firstly via an internal memo that recommended its Washington state employees work from home but that issue has now expanded to include all of its near 100,00-strong workforce based all across the US and Canada.
The news comes soon after an employee at Amazon and an employee at Facebook were announced as being diagnosed with Coronavirus.
Chris Rackow, Google’s Vice President of Global Security, said in the release to his employees:
“Out of an abundance of caution, and for the protection of Alphabet and the broader community, we now recommend you work from home if your role allows,”.
Taking further action to combat the virus, Google has also temporarily banned ads for medical face masks and has also established a Covid-19 fund, so temporary staff and vendors can take paid sick leave if they have symptoms of the virus
Furthermore, it has also teamed up with the UK’s NHS to help prevent the spread of misinformation about the outbreak, by promoting correct health and travel advice when people search for Coronavirus treatments or symptoms
