It was recently found out that the Irish Department of Health has been the victim of a cyberattack, only a few days after the Health Service Executive (HSE) has been targeted by cybercriminals.
In order to protect their data, the department was forced to shut down most of its IT infrastructure. The cyberattack is very similar to the one on the HSE and seems to also be financially motivated. It is suspected that both attacks originated from a gang using ransomware to encrypt files until a ransom is paid.
International policing agencies are currently investigating the attack and reviewing the damages to the infrastructure. Besides, the NCSC has issued an advisory notice to other Government Departments and agencies in order to provide appropriate advice and guidance.
It was reported that a ransom note allegedly from the criminal gang cyber attacking both the HSE and Department of Health has been published in the US media threatening the release of detailed patient information unless a ransom of $20 million is paid.
