A recent report from CircleCI revealed that the four best ways to measure DevOps productivity are by examining duration, mean time to recovery, throughput, and success rate.
Indeed, it was showcased that companies that are using and optimizing these four metrics are some of the most successful software businesses in the world.
Hence, the report recommends teams to have about ten minutes of workflow – compared to the usual five minutes. This is for the first metric, duration, which measures the length of a workflow. Moreover, the study shows that for the mean time to recovery metric, organizations should focus on lowering it to under an hour. For the throughput metric, it is essential to monitor it rather than trying to match other organizations. The report also states that success rate depends on what is being measured and that businesses should aim for a 90 to 95% success rate for their main branches.
Finally, it was showcased that in order to reach the best ways to measure DevOps productivity, companies can form an engineering productivity team and standardize data sources to understand what is applicable and what is not.
