The UK government has recently announced new plans to fund a new organisation for boosting innovation in the telecoms supply chain.
Indeed, this project, UK Telecoms Innovation Network (UKTIN) aims to make the UK a world leader in telecoms research and development (R&D) by providing telecoms companies access funding and testing facilities. It will also give them opportunities to collaborate on developing new and improved technologies for UK mobile and broadband networks.
The organisation will then be run by telecoms experts and will offer knowledge support and collaboration on open and interoperable network technologies such as Open RAN. This is part of the government’s plan to build a more competitive, innovative, and diverse supply chain for telecoms so as to reduce over-reliance on a few equipment makers.
Moreover, the UKTIN will be working on creating an up-to-date database of information on R&D funding in the public and private sectors, as well as an annual report that reports the latest developments and opportunities in innovative telecoms technology in the UK.
Hence, the project is set to be up and running by the end of 2021.
