The government’s cloud-first policy introduced in 2013 is aimed at transforming the public sector’s digital transformation efforts.
Yet, there has been a lot of criticisms of the initiative being unwise and inappropriate for the public sector, leaving left-cloud strategies disjointed and incomplete. This is due to the fact that around 78% of public bodies provide services that are unsuitable for migration to a public cloud while 63% of public sector organisations haven’t implemented a dedicated cloud strategy.
Hence, the directive fails to anticipate the long tail of legacy IT, entrenched outsourcing, and a lack of skills across the sector. Public-sector businesses should then be more focused on their core purpose and not on running technology, especially as adopting cloud services takes both time and resources.
